In 1988, Michael 'Smokey' Smith and his wife, Judy, started Smith Equipment Rental and Services in Carthage, Texas.  At the time, Smokey was an employee of Pennzoil and Judy had been in the banking business.  They saw a niche that could be filled by a company willing to rent equipment and provide services to local oil and gas exploration companies.

By 1994, the company had grown substantially and it was incorporated under the laws of the State of Texas as an operating C corporation.  In that same year, the company finished construction of its current headquarters building and yard at 932 S. Shelby Street in Carthage.  In late 2003, the company was changed to a limited partnership known as SERSI, LP dba Smith Equipment Rental and Services. The most recent change was made in November, 2007 when the company changed its name to "Smith Gas Field Services, LLC dba Smith Equipment Rental and Services" and began operating as a limited liability company.

Due to its growth and diversification, the company's name is no longer indicative of its current range of services, as equipment rental makes up less than 10% of the company’s total revenue.  Currently, the company offers services in each of the following areas:
